The Under Secretary of State,

COLONIAL OFFICE.

S.W.

Sir,

We have the honour to refer to the correspondence numbered 457397 regarding the missing package containing 30 Sovereigns, in transit between Queensland & Hong Kong. We wrote Messrs Burns, Philp & Co. Ltd., the claimants, and they reply as follows:

As regards stating the claim in accordance with Article 8 of the Postal Convention of 1891, that is the point we wish you to "follow up". These sovereigns were received by the Postal people and it was through some negligence on the part of the clerk that they were lost, which is a matter quite apart from the fact that the sovereigns did not reach their destination. We have been thinking that they might turn up the receipt and by this means trace who committed the fraud.

We shall feel obliged if you will give this matter your further kind consideration.

We have the honour to remain,

Sir,

Your obedient servants,
